International Education Week highlights

IEW Japan Festival

Western Michigan University presented a showcase of numerous countries and cultures for southwest Michigan residents during International Education Week Nov. 12-16.

A joint initiative of the U.S. departments of State and Education, International Education Week promotes programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in America.

"The week gave us a chance to highlight the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide," says Kimberly Ritter, WMU coordinator of international student activities in the Haenicke Institute."Education is a shared value in our interconnected world. Throughout the week, we'll offer many activities that will increase awareness of cultures, languages and customs; enhance mutual understanding; and develop international perspectives."

The local celebration was organized by WMU's Haenicke Institute for Global Education. In addition to films and a concert, the events included a talk by Dr. Jorge Castaneda, Mexico's former secretary of foreign affairs, a Japan festival, a French culture night,a travelogue and a geography bowl. Just prior to International Education Week, Kalamazoo held its 12th annual Russian Festival Nov. 9-10. on campus.

Stephen Wood, international programming intern at the Haenicke Institute, said he particularly enjoyed the French culture night and the geography bowl.

The French Club dinner was a great experience for many WMU students, staff and faculty members to experience traditional cuisine from Francophone regions all over the world," Wood said. "About 100 people attended the dinner that included entrees of Lobster Bisque and mint-lemon couscous and main courses of Quiche Lorraine and Boeuf Bourgognone accompanied with potato gratin. Dr. Lisa DeChano hosted the Geography Bowl, in which 4 teams competed. The Lee Honors College team--Jenna Teachout, William McQuitty, Alexander Smith and Alex Roman--won the close competition."
