Dr. Donald G. McCloud was appointed dean of the Diether H. Haenicke Institute for Global Education at Western Michigan University in August 2007. McCloud also holds an appointment in WMU’s Political Science Department. The Institute is comprised of 30 professional faculty/staff and oversees the University’s wide-ranging international commitments, an English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction center, as well as the academic programs for all student majors or minors in international studies. Since 2001, McCloud had been Executive Director of the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange, which administers the Fulbright and other academic exchange programs for Malaysia. He is a specialist in Southeast Asian politics and development and held a Fulbright-Hays teaching grant in Indonesia from 1971 to 1973. After leaving Millikin University (‘66), McCloud taught in suburban Chicago before entering graduate school at the University of South Carolina where he earned his Ph.D. (1974). From 1974 to 1976, he was a visiting associate professor at National Taiwan University and an advisor at the Institute of International Relations in Taipei, Taiwan. From 1976 until 2000, McCloud held senior staff positions with the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities (MUCIA), which included as members the Universities of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin. MUCIA managed major educational development and institution building programs in higher education throughout the world. He also held an adjunct associate professorship in political science at The Ohio State University, where he taught Southeast Asian studies and advised more than a dozen MA and Ph.D. students. He has been an external reader for McGill University’s Institute of Islamic Studies, an external reviewer for several academic presses, and is a member of the editorial board of Asian Affairs: An American Review. McCloud has published several books and articles on Southeast Asia, including System and Process in Southeast Asia: The Evolution of a Region (1986) and Southeast Asia: Tradition and Modernity in the Contemporary World (1995). |
