Helpful Information

  • Each student will receive a Western Michigan University email account and a BroncoNet ID. These accounts will allow you to communicate to the CELCIS teachers and staff, check your student account to learn if you owe any money to WMU, see your class schedule, and to see your final grades. If you bring a computer from home that you wish to connect to the Internet from your room, you will need your WMU password and user ID. The cost is approximately $40 per session.
  • While we are suggesting that you bring 3 photographs, you may wish to bring more.  Passport size photos are expensive in Kalamazoo ($12~$18 per picture).
  • An English translation of your birth certificate, marriage certificate and driver's license may be helpful to have while you live in the United States.
  • If you wish to have large packages sent to you while you are living in Kalamazoo, you may want to have them sent to  the CELCIS  address listed on page 6.  If you are not home when your package arrives, it will go back to the local post office off-campus.
  • Please plan to fly directly into Kalamazoo. While Detroit and Chicago appear close on the map, they are  approximately 2-1/2 hours from Kalamazoo by car.
  • Make sure to write your name on all documents as it appears in your passport.
  • Kalamazoo does have a public bus system.  It is free to ride for all CELCIS and  WMU students.  The bus operates Monday-Friday from 6 a.m.-10:15 p.m. and Saturday from 8:15 a.m.-6:45 p.m.. No Sunday service is provided. The bus routes have frequencies of 15-minutes, 30-minutes, 45-minutes, and 60 minutes, depending on the time of day and the route. If you would like to have more information about the Kalamazoo bus system and/or the schedule, please let us know when you arrive. During orientation week, you will have the opportunity to use the Kalamazoo bus system with the Director or Admissions Coordinator.
  • Make sure to travel with U.S. currency, traveler's checks, and/or credit cards (Master Card, Visa).  While  exchanging foreign currency to U.S. dollars may be possible, it is very expensive to do in Kalamazoo and is not possible on campus.
  • If you are coming to the U.S. with a credit card (Master Card or Visa), check with the company to make sure the card is authorized to make purchases in the U.S.
  • Taxi service in Kalamazoo is somewhat different than what you may expect.  Typically you can find taxis outside of the airport.  If you wish to use a taxi, we recommend that you contact the taxi company directly to arrange pick-up.  The average wait time for a taxi to arrive can be up to 15 minutes. The cost is about $1.65 to enter a taxi and $1.55 per mile after that.
