Shun Fujishima Print E-mail

Shun Fujishima was the 1971 recipient of the Murakami Memorial Scholarship awarded to one student annually at Keio University in Tokyo, Japan to study at Western Michigan University.

Because he was a junior and the scholarship funded just one year of study, Shun could not possibly graduate from Western, so he completed a variety of courses not available back home. For example, he took a computer language course in COBOL. The data input and output was being done on a telex machine which was connected on line with a host computer while, back in Japan, students had to punch in a deck of IBM cards for data entry and wait until the following day for an output.

Shun returned to Japan in 1972. Upon graduating from Keio University in 1974, he was hired by Sony Corporation. At that time the company was rigorously trying to expand their marketing activities into overseas countries and Shun believes his experiences at WMU "certainly counted favorably in the selection process."

In 1995, Shun played a key role in the launch of the PlayStation games in North America and Europe. He is currently heading Sony's repair parts operations located in Kansas City, Missouri.

Shun and his family visited Chicago in 2005
