Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants 2006/2007 academic year
Hanan Hashem Aly Teaching Arabic Ms. Hanan Hashem Aly comes to the Department of Foreign Languages, WMU, sponsored by the Institute of International Education, under the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Programs (FLTA). She received the degree of MA, American literature, University of Alexandria, Egypt: thesis titled “Problematizing History in E.L. Doctorow’s Ragtime and The Book of Daniel;” and has served six years as language instructor in the English department, Faculty of Arts, from the same institution. She taught: reading, writing, novel, listening, translation, General English and ESP courses; designed and developed many others: reading, writing, several ESP courses, miscellaneous literary course. Ms. Aly has taught in other institutions such as the Arab Academy for Science and Technology and The Faculty of Fine Arts where she also designed a number of courses including English for Computer Science (level II) and English for Sculpture. At both institutions, she also taught the Arabic language to foreign students, an experience which has prepared her for her current appointment at WMU. While at WMU Ms. Aly will take every opportunity offered her for graduate learning and cultural experiences that will serve her well when she returns to Egypt. She looks forward to a professional life as a scholar and teacher of American Literature.
Mohamed Khamis El-Zouka Teaching Arabic Ms. Marwa Mohamed Khamis El-Zouka, born in Alexandria, Egypt, graduated from the English Department, Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University in 2000, and MA (Linguistics) in 2005. She is currently registered in the same university for Ph.D. Up to the time she left for WMU, Marwa had served, for six years, while studying, in the same the Department as an English language instructor teaching reading, writing, speaking, listening, translation, and discourse analysis. She participated in conferences and workshops for professional development which enabled to hone her expertise in the IELP (Integrated English Language Program), and, undoubtedly placed her advantageously for the Fulbright award that brought her to the Department of Foreign Languages at Western Michigan University as a participant in the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program. She teaches Arabic at WMU, an avocation for which she was prepared by her previous experience when she taught the Arabic as a Foreign Language in Alexandria, Egypt, to foreign students of translation. Marwa considers it a beneficial experience to teach her own language and culture “to people who are interested in knowing more information about, Egypt, one of the most important countries in the Arab world.
