WMU FULBRIGHT ADVISORY PANELProvisions and ChargeFunction:The Western Michigan University Fulbright Advisory Panel (“the Panel,” hereafter) will advise the Provost, through the Director of the Diether Haenicke Institute for Global Education, on policies and activities that will enable the institution to derive optimal benefit from the Fulbright Programs, consistent with the university’s Mission, Goals, Strategic Objectives and expected outcomes thereof. The Panel will, in addition, work with students, faculty, Departments, Colleges, and other academic units to derive the fullest benefit from opportunities offered by the Fulbright Programs, including visiting scholars, professionals and specialists. To that end the Panel will 1. Study the programs and policies of United States Department of State and its agents, including, Council on International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), Institute of International Education (IIE), Department of Education and the United States Agency of International Development (USAID) regarding all Fulbright Programs 2. Consider all conditions for participation in each programs, and the categories of participants eligible for participation 3. Disseminate relevant information thus gathered effectively to faculty, students, staff of the WMU community 4. Pay attention to the resources for support and other modalities for encouraging eligible members of the Western Michigan University community to take advantage of appropriate Fulbright programs and activities 5. Determine the modalities for mobilizing faculty members to serve as mentors for their colleagues and for all students, particularly high-achieving students, to take advantage of the access to experiential learning offered overseas by the Fulbright Programs and other programs administered by the United States Department of State through its various agencies (IIE, CIES, DOE and USAID) 6. Work with the institution’s Fulbright Program Advisers to monitor all applications for Fulbright Programs, and, in particular serve as Campus Review Panel for all final out-going applications 7. Determine ways in which WMU, its Colleges and other academic units could leverage resources at their disposal to facilitate Fulbright experiences for members of the WMU community, particularly students, faculty and staff. 8. Determine ways in which WMU, its Colleges, Departments and other academic units could leverage resources at their disposal to facilitate the attraction of Fulbright scholars, students, professionals and specialists to enhance the universities intellectual resources, influence instructional strategies and research, learning experiences for students, and services of international and cross-cultural nature to the institution’s off-campus communities 9. Work with faculty associates and academic units hosting Fulbright visiting scholars, scholars-in-residence, professionals and specialists, so that the university communities on and off campus will derive optimum benefits from the institution’s guests. Composition: 1. One representative of each of the Colleges of the University, including the Graduate College, except that the College of Arts and Sciences may appoint up to, but not more than, three representatives 2. One representative of the University Library 3. One representative of Office of Sponsored Programs 4. One elected member of the International Education Council, if acceptable to Faculty Senate 5. Director of International Studies, as Chair 6. Director of the Diether H. Haenicke Institute, Ex-Officio Operation: The Director of the Diether H. Haenicke Institute for Global Education will make provision as much as shall be feasible to enable the Panel to discharge its responsibilities conscientiously.
