Japanese tsunami victims to be remembered
at 3/11 event
Victims of Japan’s devastating March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami and the resulting nuclear disaster will be remembered at a special event planned for 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 11, in the Fetzer Center's Putney Auditorium on Western Michigan University’s main campus.
A reading of poems about the disasters by WMU students, including Japanese exchange students, will open the event. Kuninori Matsuda, the Consul General of Japan in Detroit, will then speak about Japan’s recovery efforts in the intervening years. A screening of the documentary, "Buddhism After the Tsunami: The Souls of Zen 3/11 Japan Special,” will follow, with an introduction by the film’s producer, Tim Graf, of Germany’s Heidelberg University. Graf will also lead a post-screening discussion.
A reception with light refreshments will conclude the event, which is free and open to the public.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Comparative Religion and the Soga Japan Center.
