Campus events celebrate International Education Week
Western Michigan University will highlight numerous countries and cultures during International Education Week, set for Monday through Saturday, Nov. 15-20.
The week is a joint initiative of the U.S. departments of State and Education. The week promotes programs that not only prepare Americans for a global environment, but also attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States. Sixteen international student organizations and WMU offices are sponsoring events and activities.
2010 IEW @ WMU schedule Saturday, November 13 Russian to the Festival 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Fetzer Center Everything Russian: musical, dancing and dramatic performances, art sale, educational material displays, silent auction. Entrance fee is $8 for adults and $5 for students with I.D. Food extra. Monday, November 15 CELCIS Language Exchange 1 to 3 p.m. Bernhard Center Room 208 How quickly can you learn a foreign language? Test your skills with international students. Make new friends and have fun!
International Chess 4 to 6 p.m. Kanley Chapel, Social Room (downstairs) An informal chess competition. Light refreshments and snacks provided. Tuesday, November 16 Study Abroad Info Table 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bernhard Center food court Study abroad specialists and former study abroad students will host an informational table on the lower level near the food court. Chinese Cultural Mini Sports 6 to 9 p.m. Trimpe Building Participate in traditional Chinese games, such as devil on two sticks, spinning top, ferrule, and gobang. Learn the traditional Chinese dance, Yang Ge, and how to make dumplings. Hosted by the Association of Chinese Students and Scholars.
Wednesday November 17 Geography Bowl 5 to 7 p.m. Bernhard Center Room 208 Match your world geography wits against others in a trivia bowl presented by WMU’s Geography Department. Free and open to observers. To register a team of 4-6 participants write: intl-specialprojects@wmich.edu
Fulbright Reception 5 to 7 p.m. Richmond Center A reception for Fulbright scholars, international visiting scholars. (By invitation only)
RUMI Club 5:30 to 7 p.m. Trimpe Building Sample Turkish delicious treats (Baklava, Borek and Sarma) and enjoy a ney (Turkish flute) performance by Emin Kutay.
Thursday, November 18 Study Abroad Info Table 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Bernhard Center food court Study abroad specialists and former study abroad students will host an informational table on the lower level near the food court. Free.
Thanksgiving Lunch 11:45 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. Kanley Chapel Learn the historical background of the Thanksgiving holiday, while enjoying a typical Thanksgiving dinner, including roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, and pie.
Russian Club Music and Dinner 5 to 7 p.m. Wesley Foundation An evening of Russian food and culture, including contemporary art displays and musical performances hosted by the Russian Club.
Muslim Student Gathering 6 to 9 p.m. Bernhard Center Room 213 Learn more about the Muslim culture through informational displays and videos featuring various events hosted by the Muslim Student Association.
Taste of Culture 7 to 10 p.m. Trimpe Building Easy-to make-recipes and free tasting of dishes from around the world hosted by Sigma Lambda Beta.
Friday, November 19 High school foreign exchange student campus visit 12 to 1p.m. BC Cafeteria An informational session about studying at WMU for area high school foreign exchange students. Japan Festival 2 to 5 p.m. Trimpe Building Japan’s rich culture, including traditional food and dance, will be showcased by the Japan Club. IPC Scavenger Hunt 4:15 to 6:15 p.m. Bernhard Center Room 205 A campus scavenger hunt with prizes hosted by the International Programs Council. IPC meeting and free pizza follow the hunt.
Malaysian Night: Experience the Beauty of Diversity 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wesley Foundation Malaysian food, fashions, dance and wedding ceremonies will be featured at this event planned by the Malaysian Student Organization.
Saturday, November 20 ISA – Legally Desi 2010 6 to 8 p.m. East Ballroom, Bernhard Center Indian dance performances, skits, a multimedia presentation and a fashion show with Indian snacks hosted by the Indian Student Association. Tickets free for WMU students; $7 for non-WMU students. |
