Buddy Abroad Program accepting applications

Buddy Abroad

The WMU Buddy Abroad Program, which pairs an incoming exchange or Study Abroad @ WMU student with a WMU student, is accepting applications through June 28. The Buddy Abroad program seeks to provide support and intercultural learning opportunities for these students during their studies at WMU.

WMU students selected to serve as a Buddy Abroad must make a one-semester commitment to an incoming student and will begin corresponding with their buddy a few weeks prior to their arrival on campus. Interested students should view the program page and download an application form to apply.

Obtaining a passport key to study abroad

Passports & Visas

We strongly suggest that you apply for a passport as soon as you begin to consider studying abroad.  If you already have a passport, it is important to check the expiration date, as the passport should be valid a minimum of 6 months after the end of your study abroad program.  If you need a new passport or need to renew an expired passport, we suggest that you apply a minimum of 8 weeks or more prior to your departure.

The fee to apply for a new passport book is $135; the fee to renew an expired passport is $110. If you need the passport in a shorter time period, you may request expedited processing, which will take 2-3 weeks and will cost an additional $60.  For further instructions on how to apply for or renew a passport, please visit:

VISAS

Please keep in mind that many countries require visas for students wishing to study at their universities.  The visa process can take a few months and you must submit your passport with your visa application.  For more information on foreign entry requirements in the country of proposed study, please visit:
