The West Michigan World Trade Association awarded Western Michigan University’s, Tharyn Taylor, a junior majoring in accounting, with its $1,000 annual study abroad scholarship for a business student in May. Taylor began his study abroad program in Bangalore, India in June, where he plans to study business and the Hindi language at Christ University in Bangalore, India.

The WMWTA is a non-profit organization dedicated to maintaining West Michigan’s competitive edge in the global marketplace. The organization encourages students to expand their academic knowledge by offering a scholarship for qualified study abroad programs.

Scholarship applicants completed a 300-word essay on the theme “The Importance of World Trade on the Global Economy Today.”  The WMWTA honors the annual recipient of the scholar award of West Michigan each May at a WorldQuest, trivia competition hosted by the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan. The scholarship was presented to Taylor by Bill Richeson, of National City Bank and president of the West Michigan World Trade Association.

Taylor’s essay focused on the transportation of not only goods, but knowledge, across borders.

“International trade is so important because resources are limited in many areas of the world,” said Taylor. “Exchange between countries is not limited to raw materials, but includes the cultural exchange of new ideas. A world united in common economic goals brings about a better tomorrow for everyone.”

Taylor began his study abroad program in June at Christ University in Bangalore, India, a WMU twinning partner since 1997. He said he is most looking forward to learning about India’s rich history of tradition but also how it is coming into the modern day.  He is WMU's first study abroad student at Christ College, where he will study global business and the Hindi language.

"We had a number of well qualified applicants for this year's scholarship,” said John Collins, DHL Global Forwarding and vice president of the West Michigan World Trade Association. “We were impressed with Tharyn's selection of a yearlong program at Christ University in India. His study of finance and economics will broaden his skills in international trade and give him a competitive edge in today's marketplace."

Studying in WMU’s Haworth College of Business, Taylor has discovered a passion for international business theory and practices. He considered studying abroad as an opportunity to enhance his understanding of global business.

“Studying in another country offers me the opportunity to see the world through others eyes,” said Taylor. “Living in another culture can greatly expand our perspectives, helping us tackle everyday tasks with new knowledge. Experiences abroad also enhance your resume, possibly giving you an edge when entering the job market. I hope that everyone considers going abroad.”
