All WMU students attending a study abroad program will be covered by travel health insurance included in the program fee. Specific information is available in the following documents: All students studying abroad through Western Michigan University are required to enroll in the WMU study abroad insurance plan, except for locations where insurance coverage is mandated by the national government (Australia[1] and New Zealand) or if you are studying abroad through an intermediary company (provider) which requires you to carry their insurance. Unless you have approval for an exemption, during your Study Abroad program, you will be enrolled in a comprehensive insurance program called GLOBAL GUARDIAN which provides health and emergency insurance (MEDEX), travel intelligence (iJET) and security / political evacuation (Kroll). Students with an insurance exemption will be enrolled in iJET separately.
Per University policy, private insurance coverage will not be accepted to replace the WMU study abroad insurance plan. During the orientation meeting for your program, we will provide you with a proof of coverage card, and two brochures – TravMed and the MEDEX SECURE Rider outline the health coverage and the emergency assistance options.
