In addition to overseeing budget and personnel for the Diether H. Haenicke Institute, Bill’s responsibilities include direction of efforts in immigration, recruiting, and admissions. Bill has directed or assisted in negotiating contracts in Russia, Sri Lanka, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain, Poland, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bolivia, and the Sunway University twinning contract during 1986 that has resulted in over two thousand Malaysian students enrolling at Western Michigan University.

A native Hoosier who grew up in the Detroit area, Bill's interest in international affairs was heightened by growing up in a home that hosted international students visiting a nearby university. A study abroad experience in high school convinced him that history and international politics deserved his life-long attention. After three decades at WMU, Bill is more convinced than ever that the international exchange of students and university faculty is critical to building mutual understanding and peace between nations.
