WMU International admissions counselor
turns Dubai builder on to Kalamazoo

Kristina EvansA Dubai builder who recently purchased properties in Downtown Kalamazoo credited his awareness about the city to a February meeting he, his wife and daughter had with Kristina Evans, a Western Michigan University international admissions counselor, at a college fair in Dubai. The meeting was referred to in an article that appeared in the Kalamazoo Gazette on Sept. 7.

Evans’ initial meeting with the family was at an International Student Network Fair in Dubai, when she spoke to them for 45 minutes to answer questions Nastasha Mahajan had about attending WMU. Evans' comments about the quality of life in Kalamazoo prompted a June trip for the family to scope out the city and campus, which spurred Mahajan’s interest in acquiring some downtown properties.

“Sudhir noted right away that there was something different about Kalamazoo,” said Evans, who has worked as a WMU international admissions counselor since fall 2006. “I met with the family while they were in town and we remain in regular contact. I plan to visit them in Dubai while on a recruiting trip to the Middle East in late October. They loved the area and Nastasha definitely wants to attend Western.”

WMU has strong connections to the Persian Gulf and conducts regular recruitment activities there. Interim Provost Bassam Harik and Haenicke Institute Dean Dr. Donald G. McCloud, recently traveled to Dubai to implement a strategic partnership with American College of Dubai.
