Canadian Studies

Welcome to Canadian Studies at Western Michigan University, an interdisciplinary initiative to promote the study of Canada and Canada-United States relations.

Canadian Studies at WMU has four Areas of Emphasis in teaching and research:
  • New France, French Canada, and Québec
  • Migration, Borderlands, and the Great Lakes Region
  • Transnational Environmental and Resources Issues
  • U.S.-Canada Economic, Diplomatic, and Cultural Relations

In recognition of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec, Canadian Studies is pleased to announce the program theme for 2008-09, The French in North America. A series of symposia, lectures, and other public programs will celebrate, explore, and analyze the enduring legacy of the French in North America. The purpose of these and other events is to examine the motivation, conditions, and effects of French activities, policies, and practices in Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean.
