MET will pay for a study abroad program that is invoiced through a Michigan public university based on the undergraduate tuition rate at that university for the number of credit hours enrolled. Any fees specific to the study abroad that are not charged to all WMU students regardless of curriculum will not be covered. The same policy applies for the Kalamazoo Promise. MET and Promise recipients should look into additional scholarship funding if their study abroad program costs exceed the cost of studying on campus. On-line program profiles for study abroad programs administered by WMU contain total cost estimates that serve as the financial aid budget. See program profiles at
www.wmich.edu/studyabroad. MET or Kalamazoo Promise funding can be applied only to study abroad programs approved by the Haenicke Institute. MET and Kalamazoo Promise funding questions should be directed to Financial Aid or Accounts Receivable. Haenicke Institute staff do not have authority to make any funding determinations for MET or the Kalamazoo Promise.

Soga Japan Center Film Series
Japan Foundation Midwest Film Festival
Changing Scenery of Japan
Spring 2008
The Japan Foundation Midwest Film Festival and the Michitoshi Soga Japan Center will show five modern Japanese films on 35mm film focusing on the "Changing Scenery of Japan." For many years, Japan has often been portrayed in films as a homogeneous, patriarchal society whose citizens are serious and introverted. While there is some truth to these stereotypes, Japan has significantly changed over the past decades. There is more diversity now, people from different cultures co-exist, girls and women are more independent, men embrace their feminine sides, and traditional Japanese family values are not as widespread. This year's films depict these changes and focus particularly on the powerful, uninhibited, and dynamic youth who play a major role in changing the scenery of today's Japan.
The selected films are "Pacchigi", "Water Boys", "Hanging Garden", "Linda Linda Linda", and "All Under the Moon". Each film will be shown at 7 p.m. at WMU's Little Theatre located on Western's East Campus at the corner of Oakland Drive and Oliver Street. All showings are free and open to the entire Kalamazoo community.
